In the other Swallows and Amazons books, Peter Duck is a make-believe character, so I read this as a story within the story. Ransome brings you an experience of the tropics unlike any I've read, with the lovely parts of traveling by sea and exploring deserted islands going hand-in-hand with the really uncomfortable bits.

He is best known for writing the Swallows and Amazons series of children’s books about the school-holiday adventures of children, mostly in the Lake District and the Norfolk Broads.

Many of the books involve sailing; fishing and camping are other common subjects. Old though he is, Peter Duck is yearning to sail 'blue water' one more time, and when he hears that the Wild Cat is a crew member short, he volunteers his services.

He is, of course, perfect for the job, and the Swallows and Amazons soon discover that Peter Duck can spin a good yarn, with more than a grain of truth to it.
